The Whio, also known as the blue duck, is an iconic species of Aotearoa, found only along clear, fast flowing mountain rivers in the North and South Islands of New Zealand.
Perfectly adapted to life in strong currents, the whio has powerful legs. Its slate blue-grey feathers, with chestnut spotting on the breast and a pale grey bill, blend beautifully with river rocks and flowing water, a natural camouflage for life in the wild.

Our handcrafted wool Whio reflects these special features with soft blue-grey tones, and a pale curved beak inspired by this remarkable river bird. This felted companion offers tamariki a meaningful way to learn about New Zealand’s native wildlife through hands on, imaginative play.

Part of our Aotearoa – Land of Little Wonders collection, the whio invites tamariki to explore the natural world with wonder and care.
